Precious Metal Marks

The identification mark of the manufacturing company and the fineness of the metal contained in a piece of jewelry.

Let's start with the manufacturer's recognition mark, a key element in ensuring the authenticity of a piece of jewelry. This mark consists of a rectangle with three numbers and two letters inside. The first number represents the code assigned by the Chamber of Commerce trademarks office to the company producing precious metals, while the second indicates the province where the company is located. This mark, such as mine, 716MI, guarantees that the object complies with regulations for the production of precious metals and that the fineness represented by the metal mark is accurate. For example, if you find the mark 750 on an object, you can be sure it is 18k gold, with the manufacturer's mark ensuring the gold quality imprinted on the object. It is important to note that the regulations allow not marking objects with a weight less than one gram, primarily referring to very small-sized items.

Precious Metals and Their Fineness:

Platinum (PT): 950/900/850 - Palladium (PD): 950/500

Gold (AU): 750/585/375 - Silver (AG): 925/800

The most common metal mark in jewelry is that of gold. This numeric mark, enclosed in a hexagon, can have the numbers 750, 585, or 375, representing 18k, 14k, and 9k gold, respectively. For example, the mark 750 indicates that the object is composed of 75% pure gold and 25% alloy. Other Precious Metals and Their Marks:

Platinum, often reserved for high-end items, has a mark similar to that of gold but with the PT acronym engraved below the number. Permissible fineness values are 950, 900, and 850. Palladium, less common in jewelry, has a mark similar to that of platinum but with the PD acronym below the numerical part. Permissible fineness values for palladium are 950 and 500. Silver, another precious metal, has an oval mark with the fineness inside, which can be 925 or 800.
